Science Review

Science Test is scheduled for Tuesday, November 28th -A hard copy of the review will be handed out in class on Monday

Biodiversity Review Sheet

Classification of Living Things: The purpose of most classification system is to organize members into similar groups

Characteristics of Life:
  1. Cells- all living things have cells
  2. Metabolism- all living things eat, drink, breath, excrete
  3. Growth- all living things take material in to enlarge
  4. Reproduction- all living things are able to produce copies of themselves
  5. Irritability- all living things are able to react to change in their environment
  6. Adaption – all living things are able to compete with each other for food and space to survive
  7. Movement- all living things are able to move

Structural Adaptations: Is the way plants or animals look in their habitat. The plant/animal uses its structural adaption to survive. For example, speed, camouflage, teeth, eyes, fur, hair, paws claws, hoofs, legs, long necks, noses.

Behavioural Adaption: Is the way plants and animals act in their habitat. The plant or animal uses its behavioural adaption to survive. For example, protection of young, feeding young, building nest or den, finding a mate, hiding predators

Review characteristics of the animal kingdom (notes from kingdom presentation. This will be represented in multiple choice format, You do not need to memorize these )

Review five groups of the five kingdoms

Review the classification and the animal kingdom (vertebrates and invertebrates)

List and describe 2 benefits of biodiversity (will be covered next week)

List and describe 2 threats to biodiversity (will be covered next week)

List and describe 3 ways we can protect biodiversity (will be covered next week)

Agenda Items

Agenda Items

Literacy:

Reading Workshop- We will finish our book Wonder this week. Next week, we get to go view our movie.

Writing Workshop- We are continuing to work with figurative language and description to create emotion and feeling through writing
-Students will be submitting their good copies of their Halloween Narratives on Thursday

Math:

We are continuing to work through our patterning unit. We are focusing on the explicit pattern rule as well as word problems

Daily Challenge:
Here is some more practice with the explicit patterning rule.

a) 550, 555, 560, 565, 570...

Find the 77th term

b) 485, 473, 461, 449 ....

Find the 37th term

Science -We have wrapped up our gallery walks dealing with the animal kingdoms. We will now be focusing on the fungi and bacteria kingdom this week

Agenda Items:
-Please send in any late trip forms for Wonder
-Looking forward to meeting with many of you through our parent/teacher conference - I have sent a reminder of your date and time last week. If there is a conflict, please let me know ASAP.

Have a great week everyone :)

Math Challenge Take 2

Math Challenge

These questions are very similar to what we did in math today. Each question involves an operation (multiplication, division, addition and subtraction) between columns 1 and 2 and then an additional step. So these are multi step questions.

25          5               3
36           6              4
49           7              5
77           11           5

Pattern Rule:  _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
3              9              6
5              11           8
8              12           10
9              15           12

Pattern Rule: __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Bonus – Come up with your own, to challenge our class tomorrow :)

Update

Agenda Update

Literacy-
Reading Workshop- we are continuing to read and discuss the novel Wonder
**Remember, to bring those permission forms for the movie***

Writing Workshop- Draft copies of the Halloween narrative are due on Monday -We are going to be self editing, peer editing and conferencing about them this week

Science- We will be doing part 1 of our gallery walk in science on Monday -There will be NO more work time given in class

Math- We will be starting our patterning unit this week

Daily Challenge

a) I am the seventh number in the following sequence of numbers: 1,4, 9, 16.....
What number am I?

b) I am the sixth in the following sequence of numbers: 1, 3, 7, 15.......
What number am I?

c) Edgar does sit-ups daily. On Monday, he did 20 sit ups. On Tuesday, he did 30. He did 50 sit ups on Wednesday and 90 on Thursday. If he continues this pattern, Edgar will do an impressive number of sit ups on Saturday. What number of sit ups will he do?

Weekly Update

What an AMAZING  day we had yesterday at OELC. I was so proud of our class and how well they represented our school. Thank you to all our wonderful parent volunteers.

Science: We are returning back to our biodiversity unit for a couple of weeks. Students will be doing a mini research activity about one of the classes of the animal kingdom. (See outline below)

Grade 6 Biodiversity Science Project

RESEARCH PROJECT:  Choose a class of the animal kingdom that you would be interested in researching (vertebrate or invertebrate)

Your project must include the following information

1)     Common characteristics it shares with other animals in its class (e.g . identify whether it is a bird, fish, reptile, amphibian or mammal and list their characteristics)
2)     Choose two species within that class:  scientific name, habitat, food, appearance
3)     Identify at least 3 adaptations of your animal (special features or behaviour and how it helps that living thing survive in its habitat, e.g. webbed feet, fur)
4)     Biodiversity: How this species contributes to the diversity of life (positively or negatively)
5)     Human Activity: How does human activity impact on the survival of your animal?
6)     Your own choice:  Choose another aspect of your animal to research (e.g. position in a food chain, other interesting facts, etc.)

Math-  We are continue with our data management unit - This week we will focus on mean, median and mode.  We will also explore drawing from conclusions from graphs..

Literacy- Reading - we are continuing working our way through our novel "Wonder"
 - We are working on variety of reading strategies as we progress

Writing- Students were asked to complete a writing on demand for our trip to OELC - due Wednesday
We are continuing to draft our Halloween narratives throughout the remainder of this week
