Agenda Update

Hi Everyone,
I am so impressed how everyone is handling the “Secret Santa” activity. The random acts of kindness are so impressive and are spreading throughout our room. Remember, it doesn’t have to be something tangible. It might be some sort of encouragement, a note, including someone at recess or just saying or doing something kind. I am so proud of the acts I have seen so far, we have such kind and caring students in our classroom.

Here is a quick agenda update to help you organize your time.

Literacy:
Writing: Santa Manual- draft copy due Wednesday - Editing and conferencing will take place Thursday and Friday - Good copy will be due on Friday, December 22nd.

Math:
Measurement Math Test - Tuesday, December 19th
Measurement Review- due Monday, December 18th
Dream House Assignment- Room sketch to be completed at home - Due on Friday, December 22nd. Students will be giving much more time in class both this week and next

Social Studies-
Mini inquiry project on organization - due Thursday, December 14th- will be completed in class with a partner
-Social studies test on Wednesday, December 20th


Health-
Healthy eating menu -good copy will be due on Friday, December 22nd

- Hand- Me -Down Day - This FRIDAY, we are having a Green Team Day to encourage and celebrate the reuse of clothing! Wear your hand-me-downs or thrift shop clothing and earn eco-points for your class!

- Christmas for Kids- Our annual food, toiletries and toy drive (new items only please) is underway and we will continue collecting items until December 22nd . Christmas for kids is a registered charity in Innisfil that helps families at Christmas

Measurement Review

Hi Everyone,

Here is a measurement review for you to work through. We will also being doing some review in class. Please complete review for Monday, December 18th. Our math test is rescheduled for Tuesday, December 19th, 2017.

Helpful Hints

Perimeter= add up all the sides of a shape

Area of a rectangle= Length x Width               

Area of a triangle= Base x Height ÷2

Area of a parallelogram= Base x Height

Volume of a rectangular prism= Length x Width x height

Volume of a triangular prism= Length x Width x Height ÷2

Surface area is the total area of all of the faces or surfaces - Remember this will be done in 3 different steps

Social Studies Unit Test Review

    Define the terms import and export

              An import is a good or service brought into one country from another.

              An export is a good or service that is sold to another

Define the terms good and service

       Goods are items that are tangible, such as books, pens, salt, shoes, hats and folders.

      Services are activities provided by other people, such as doctors, lawn care workers,           dentists, barbers, waiters, or online servers.

Identify reasons to why a country would trade with another countries –In              social studies folder

-Describe ways in which Canada is connected to USA –Note taken from video (posted on the blog) (We will also talk about this more throughout the week)

 - Name and define the four lenses (Social studies folder)

-Give examples of world issues that would fall under each lenses (Social studies folder)

-Identify and describe two different organizations that support with different world issues (e.g. World Health Organization, Doctor's without boarders etc.)

-Locate the top 11 trading partners on a World map (see study sheet)

Dream House Project

As we begin our measurement unit, one of the concepts we will be focusing on is area and perimeter. You will now have the opportunity to apply your learning to a real life situation (well sort of); you will design your dream house! If you have more than one level in your house be sure to sketch a rough floor plan for each. The assignment has been split into 4 parts with specific minimum requirements on each part.  Please read the assignment completely before you begin.

Part 1: Room Sketch

·        To practice making a floor plan measure the dimensions of a room in your house or the classroom. Record all the measurements and then sketch the room (from a bird’s eye view)

·         Label all the dimensions

·         Use the following scale 1 cm= 1 m or 1 unit square= 1 m square 

Part 2:  Your dream house requirements:

·         At least 6 different rooms (bath, bed, kitchen, living room, dining room, family room, den, craft room, play room, etc.)

·         You may have more than one of each room (ex. 3 bedrooms)

·         Be sure to label each room on the floor plan

·         You must have a garage (size of your choice)

·         Each square on your graph represents one square meter

·         You must have a least 3 different types of angles and at least 3 types of geometric shapes in your house

·         Bedrooms should have closets

Part 3:  Decorating:

·         Choose at least one room to decorate

·         Draw the floor plan of that room- all furniture and appliances are included and drawn to scale

·         Calculate the cost of flooring for your room – calculate the area 

·         Calculate the cost of paint- calculate the surface area of your room – don’t forget to minus windows and doors

·         Each can of paint will cover 36 m2

·         Average cost of carpet is $10.00/ m2

·         Average cost for hardwood flooring is $17.50/m2 

·         Average cost of high quality paint is $33.50 / can

·         Determine how much money you will spend on decorating your room

Part 4:  Demonstration of math skills:

·         On separate paper, all math will be shown

·         Area and perimeter of each room

·         Calculations of flooring and paint for your room

·         Included the total area and perimeter of your house

Me to We Bracelets

The bracelets will be on sale Wednesday, Thursday and Friday all during 2nd nutrition break outside of the library. Cash will be accepted and it is also available through School Cash.

Below is a photograph of the 5 different colour choices and their respected pillars, education, food, water, opportunity and health. The bracelet's are $10 each, $5 goes to the woman who made it (these women are from 3rd world countries) and $5 goes to the pillar chosen (education etc.) in the most neediest countries.  The bracelets will arrive before the holiday.

Weekly Update & Math Challenge

Agenda Items:

Literacy: We are currently working through our novel "Ghost Ride" focusing on a variety of reading strategies
Writing- We have started our procedural writing unit and are planning out our Santa Manuals

Math: We are working on 2-D measurement- focusing on perimeter of irregular polygons and area of rectangles, triangles and parallelograms

Science: Biodiversity tests were handed back today- please sign and return. We will be beginning our space unit after Christmas

Social Studies : We will be returning to social studies for the next three weeks- We will be focusing on World Issues under the four lenses of economical, political, social, environmental. A test review will be coming home near the end of the week


The Arts: We will be doing two visual art pieces
-Tableau presentations will be tomorrow

Secret Santa!

Dear Parents, 

To celebrate classroom community, our classroom has chosen to participate in a Secret Santa gift exchange. This is a fun and exciting way to bring holiday cheer into the classroom and provide opportunities to encourage one another this holiday season.

Each student will draw a classmate’s name and will be responsible for providing “random acts of kindness” for this friend leading up to Christmas Break. In addition, a $10 to $15 gift will be wrapped and exchanged at our Christmas party the last week of school. Please let me know ASAP if this will be a problem. Remember, the gift should be wrapped and should only have the receiver’s name on it. We are planning on having the gift exchange on Wednesday, December 20th, 2016.

Please send me an email or encourage your child to speak with me directly if there are any questions or concerns. Thank you for your help with this special initiative. It is my hope that this activity will be a valuable lesson in generosity and outward thinking for each student involved.
