Report Outline "Alien Invasion Assignment"

Three Parts:

1. Introduction:
- opening sentence to introduce the general topic, catch reader's attention- hook the reader
-In two or more sentences introduce your planet and outline the defining characteristics that you will be addressing in your body paragraphs
-introduce the name of your alien
-A sentence to indicate the adaptations that your alien has to successfully live on your planet

2. Body Paragraphs
- one full  paragraph for each of the characteristics and the adaptation your alien has to cope with it
The paragraphs should be in the order in which they are mentioned in the introduction
 Each paragraph should include:
-a topic sentence to introduce the particular characteristics of the planet
- one to three sentences to add scientific details that describe the characteristic
-one to three sentences to describe the features of your alien that allow it to live successfully with this characteristic
-a sentence that sums up the paragraph and leads to the next characteristics in a logical way

Example:
Saturn is very cold. It has a temperature of -285 degrees Fahrenheit. The rings are made up of ice, snow, rock and gases. Due to the cold, Satuloops have red eyes that shoot heat rays. The rays can heat and burn different objects when needed and melt ice for water. Satuloops also wears red bracelets on both wrists. The bracelets allow Satuloops to satay warm.  

3. Conclusion
- A paragraph that restates each of the characteristics of your planet and a summarization of how your alien is well suited to live there.
- This paragraph should be around 4 to six sentences long

40 Book Challenge -Half Way Party

We are about half way there....each reader is working hard towards their reading goal. On February 16th we are celebrating our reading journey as a class. Our celebration will include a reading cafe, which will include some tasty treats and hot chocolate, with all the fixings.
Our class, as always, is eager to participate and volunteer, so I have divided them into two separate committees. The committee has picked a red carpet theme. Students are asked to dress up as a book character or a famous person. During our celebration, we will participate in a book mannequin challenge. We will also be finishing our class novel "Undergrounders"

Literacy - Reading Workshop- We are still working through our novel Undergrounders - We will be having our reading celebration on February 16th. More details to follow.

Writing Workshop- This week will be starting to structure our research report for our alien assignment. Monday and Tuesday will be given for research. We will be structuring the report in an essay format. I will be posting the success criteria for this later in the week

Math-We are continuing to exploring the properties of a triangle- Students will constructing triangles using established criteria. Name of the game rounds 7 & 8 this week

Science- This week will be focusing the sun and the moon and phases

Constellation Assignment

This is an OPTIONAL assignment- I know a lot of you are busy with science fair, but someone of you wanted an EXTRA challenge

Constellation Assignment 
1. Choose a constellation listed below
2. Find the myth about the constellation (use the internet- don't forget to sight your sources)
3. Find the location of the constellation in the sky
4. If it is a Zodiac sign, then tell the personality characteristics associated with someone born under that sign.
5. Draw the star/constellation shape in the sky (What the stars actually look like. e.g. Leo's constellation picture looks like a lion)
You will present your findings to class.

Alien Invansion

Alien Invasion

Using the knowledge you have of the Solar System, along with your creative ideas, you are going to create an alien from another planet. Depending on the characteristics and conditions of the planet, your alien must include special features and/or adaptions that will enable it to survive in such an environment.

Expectations:

-      Choose a planet in the solar system. You can also choose the moon or the sun.

-      Research and gather important information about your planet

-      Design at least 3 different features/adaptations that your alien would need to survive life on this planet (e.g. size, special glasses, fur, suction cup feet etc.)

The assignment will be divided into three components:

Creature Design: Using your knowledge of the planet, design a visual representation of your alien with at least 3 special features that will require to survive on the planet. The visual representation may be 2 or 3 dimensional. Your creature will go towards your visual art mark. Some supplies will be provided in class (e.g. Plasticine, pipe cleaners, googly eyes)

Written: Using the graphic organizer provided in class describe the characteristic of the planet and the adaptation/special feature that your alien has in order to survive the condition. Be sure to give detail. This organizer will then act as a template for the report. Please do NOT start the writing component until we cover it in class as it follows a specific format. Mini lessons will be provided for each section of the report

Differentiated Instructional Activity- see activity sheet provided- Students must choose one activity to complete. Put your creative juices to work to complete one of the following questions. You can present your information in any way that you choose. A list of ideas and possibilities has been provided. If you have a different idea of how you want to present your answer, check with your teacher to get approval.

1.     A Day in the Life of the Alien- Using your knowledge of the planet and your own ideas, describe/explain what a typical day would be like for your alien

2.     I’m Hungry!- what would your alien eat in a typical day? Plan the menu using your knowledge of the planet and your own ideas

3.    Home Sweet Home! Describe and demonstrate what the alien’s shelter would be like and support why using your knowledge of the planet

4.    Tennis Anyone! Describe/demonstrate a sport or activity that your animal many be involved in

Taxi! How would your alien get around? What might the modes of transportation be on your planet? 

You also have some flexibility to use your own idea. It needs to be approved by Mrs. Breau.

Literacy- We will be wrapping up our media unit this week. This week we will be exploring ratings on movies and video games. Media presentations finished up today. We will be finishing up our book trailers this week during our library work period.

Writing- In writing this week students will be beginning to take jot notes on their planet to prepare them for the alien project ( more details coming soon!)

Reading- We are continuing to work with our novel "Undergrounders"
